(Page updated 28th October 2019)
We are a small friendly group of enthusiastic walkers who meet up about twice a month. Most walks are on Tuesday mornings, covering about 6 – 8 miles. We also arrange occasional longer walks for those who like a challenge.
We meet at 0930 in Orston Village Hall car park for all walks unless otherwise indicated. We then arrange car sharing on an adhoc basis where we need to drive to the start of a walk.
New walkers are very welcome whether you come along for one walk or join us on a regular basis. Please contact Pauline on 01949 851379 or email email@example.com if you would like to be included on our email circulation list or would like any further information
Here are the proposed walk dates for the next walks – Please keep an eye on your email for information about possible cancellation if the weather is particularly bad. All morning walks, meeting Orston Village Hall car park at 0930, unless otherwise indicated. Please let Pauline know if going direct to the walk start point (email or 07811 001197).
If a walk has to be cancelled, Pauline will normally circulate an email by 8am on the day of the walk.
Tuesday 5th November
Weather permitting, Janet and John will be leading the Epperstone walk originally scheduled for 24th September but cancelled due to bad weather. A reminder of the details …..
The walk begins in Epperstone, passes through Halloughton and is 7.1 miles long. There are good views for much of the route that has several ascents and descents and no stiles. Given the length of the walk and the ‘hilly’ nature of the terrain we have planned two refreshment stops. There is an option to shorten the walk by approximately two miles.
For anyone wishing to have lunch, there is The Cross Keys pub in Epperstone. We simply give our orders and pay on arrival. If having lunch parking is in The Cross Keys car park, otherwise there is plenty of street parking nearby. Meet in front of the Cross Keys pub, Main Street, Epperstone. NG14 6AD.
Tuesday 19th November
Weather permitting, Robert will be leading the Collingham walk originally scheduled for 8th October and also cancelled due to bad weather. A reminder of the details ….
Collingham circular – the Roman Trail. Collingham is just north of Newark on the A1133. Start point is car park at the medical centre/co-op High st Collingham. Park far left hand corner. Approx 5 miles with option for shorter walk of 2.25 miles. We follow in the tracks of the Romans along a secluded green lane and take in fine views across the Trent Valley. Mostly level with slight gradients across farm land using field paths bridle ways and minor roads. Likely to be muddy in places after wet weather. No stiles.
Tuesday 3rd December – walk leader needed
Tuesday 17 December – Pauline has arranged Xmas walk/lunch for this date
Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to lead walks. If you can take on one of the future dates please let Pauline know even if you haven’t yet got a walk in mind.
If you want to check out if a proposed walk would be OK or need more information about what is involved, please don’t hesitate to contact Pauline (email or 01949 851379)
Orston Walkers invade Wales – May 2019
Another successful tour, this time based at The Mulberry Inn situated in the tiny village of Llwynmawr in the beautiful Ceiriog Valley near Llangollen. Photos below:
Further Adventures in the Yorkshire Dales – May 2018
A record 19 walkers enjoyed some wonderful weather in beautiful Arkengarthdale. A few photos for the album are included below:
Adventures in The Yorkshire Dales – May 2017
Another very successful trip to Arkengarthdale, the northern most Dale. As usual we stayed at the CB Inn. Excellent accommodation, good food and great beers. Eleven of us made the trip and the weather was unbelievable. In fact it was rather too hot on the walk from Richmond on the final day (28 degrees!). John Johnson met us on arrival at the CB Inn having completed approx. half The Coast To Coast walk the previous week. He left us on the last day with Gordon to complete the easterly part of the Walk heading to Robin Hood’s Bay. Well done to both.
Three nights at Littletown Farm in The Lakes – May 2016
Twelve walkers on this our fourth venture north. The weather was kind, the accommodation and food great and a welcoming pint or two of Wainwrights best bitter to finish the day.
Tuesday 20th October – Celebrating a ‘significant’ birthday
Walking Group visits Arkengarthdale for third year in a row (May 2015)
Our stay in the Yorkshire Dales was extended to 3 nights this year. It worked well for our party of 12. Although the medium range forecast was grim the weather was quite kind to us and we ended each day with dry boots.
Where will we venture next year??? Watch this space.
Walking Group tackles the Yorkshire Dales for second year (May 2014)
Following a successful walking break in the Dales in May 2013 it was decided we make this an annual event. As no one could, dared or wanted to suggest another destination we again used The Charles Bathurst Inn in Arkengarthdale as a base as they had made us so welcome previously. We were not disappointed.
Eleven walkers made the trip and we had planned walks for each of the three days. The weather was very kind to us. It looks as though The CB Inn will have to brace itself for another visit from Orston next year.
Arkengarthdale – the ‘Hidden Dale’ (May 2013)
Ten of the walking group members spent 3 days in the ‘hidden dale’, Arkengarthdale, based at the Charles Bathurst Inn near Reeth. The weather was kind to us and we managed 3 walks including a biggy of about 13 miles. A full set of photos from the tour are available here
