Thinning out of the wooded areas
It’s been 20 years since the Millennium Green was founded and we have decided to do a long-overdue bit of thinning out of the wooded areas. It is best practice to plant the trees closer than needed to allow for losses to disease and failing to establish. But over time the trees grow tall and thin in a fight for light and resources. This weakens the trees and stresses them out. They are then more susceptible to wind damage and attack from pests and disease. I met Alec the Tree Surgeon last month and he suggested the candidates for removal. This will open out the wood and create little glades – ideal to establish some wildflowers and increase the biodiversity of the site. As the Millennium Green is in a conservation area we need to apply to Rushcliffe Borough Council for permission. The process takes around 6 weeks so once granted we should be able to start in early April. This is the Ideal time for planting wildflower seeds so fingers crossed they should establish in time for a good show this year.
This work isn’t cheap and will cost around £500 to carry out. We are planning to apply for a Biodiversity Grant, but there is no guarantee. Failing that we will be looking to utilise money raised at the Retox Karaoke event or from our Friends of The Millennium Green scheme.
